Angel of Vengeance The Novel that Inspired the TV Show Moonlight Trevor O Munson Books
OK... I'm a sucker for a GOOD vampire story. It was while I was in junior high school that I first read Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and saw the 1931 film on late-night TV. Since then I've encountered many other creatures that go bump in the night, but none, save this particular being, has held me so tightly in its grip.To be sure, not all novels featuring vampires in lead roles are good, but for me, "Angel of Vengeance" by Trevor Munson is among the best. Mick Angel is a Los Angeles based private detective... former drug addict... vampire. Being a slave to his blood lust he is vicious, and his tale is violent. Fortunately, Mick has rules -- no women, no children, no innocents. But woe to those who don't fit the criteria, for Mick also has a penchant for his own brand of justice.
Mick was turned decades ago, and true to form, dialogue, like this exchange between Mick and a stripper named Reesa, read like something right out of 1940s film noir:
“How‘bout tonight? My first performance is at ten. It’s a little racy, but if you’re not the type whose sensibilities are easily offended why don’t you come see it? We can grab a drink at the bar between shows.”
“Sure,” I say again. It’s a long time since I’ve been out on the town for anything other than work or blood.
“Great. I’ll put your name on the list,” she says in a voice as playful as a tongue on an earlobe. “You’ll know me. I’ll be the one in the red feather boa and not much else.”
“I’ll be the one in the fedora.”
"Angel of Vengeance" is the basis for the 2008 television series, "Moonlight," starring Alex O'Loughlin and Sophia Myles (which I also recommend). But as I understand it, Munson's novel wasn't published until after the series aired. Although the series is lighter in tone, both it and the novel are worth your time... assuming, of course, that you too are a sucker for GOOD vampire tales.

Angel of Vengeance The Novel that Inspired the TV Show Moonlight Trevor O Munson Books Reviews
When Moonlight aired in 2007/2008 I went to MySpace and read the first eight chapters that Trevor Munson was nice enough to share with the Moonlight fans. I loved what I read and couldn't wait for the book to be published. I waited for over three years to read this book and I was not disappointed - I love it.
I have always loved vampire stories but this book is so unique and it is a page turner. In Trevor's "note from the author" at the end of the book he says that he had just reread Dracula and followed it up with a Phillip Marlowe novel by Raymond Chandler. He says that the combination inspired his idea for a vampire who is a private investigator. He used a touch of the Chandler style of noir, and the result is a must read for anyone who likes vampire stories or just a great dramatic novel in general.
When I read I always have an image of what the characters look like - and in this case it was an especially enjoyable read because I could imagine Alex O'Loughlin just as I had seen him as Mick St. John on Moonlight. In my mind Alex slipped into the role of Mick Angel perfectly, and I was fascinated with the differences in the book and the show. Some things are very different and some things give answers to some of the questions that the fans had about what happened in the show. Here is a good example; one question I heard over and over was, "how did Coraline survive the fire?" Well, I always said it was because of the royal bloodline she came from. We saw her brother Lance heal after his arm caught fire in the lab where he was engaged in battle with Mick. Now we have a new explanation from the book; vampires can come back if the ashes from the fire are not scattered.
I like the way that Mick started out as a heroin addict - then after being turned his "fixes" of blood were not that different from his former "fixes" of heroin. We read the story from Mick's point of view. The way that Trevor described Mick's feelings about the bizarre world he had been forced into, and his feelings about living as a vampire - or a monster as he sometimes felt - makes for a smooth and exciting read. He brings each character to life so colorfully and completely. It made me disappear into the book with them, and that is exactly what I want when I read. I have been an avid reader all of my life, and this book is now at the top of my list of favorites.
In Trevor's note from the author he also explained that the book was too "dark" for CBS - so he and Ron Koslow used the idea that Trevor had for a sequel, the idea of the little girl named Elizabeth being watched over by Mick as she grew up. It was to be called "Guardian Angel". Now I have something else to look forward to - that sequel.
Because of Trevor Munson we now have our DVDs of the delightful and magical Moonlight to enjoy over and over, and now I have the book that started it all to enjoy. I will definitely be rereading this one. Moonlight was the best show on TV, and all of the fans know all of the reasons why it was not renewed, so I will not go into all of that. I will just say that we all know that it was not because it was not a good show and it wasn't because of ratings. Trevor, thank you for the book and for all of the hard work it took to bring it to television. I can hardly wait to read "Guardian Angel".
"The Novel that Inspired the TV Show Moonlight"
Yes, 'inspired' is definitely a good word for it.
I came very late to "Moonlight," having only just watched the entirety of its episodes a couple weeks ago. I looked around for more after that, intrigued by the interesting take on vampires presented there that I hadn't seen before. One thing led to another, and this book found its way into my hands.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I knew from what had been written by others, that the book was much darker than the show.
What I saw when I read 'Angel of Vengeance' was something I can only describe as immediate, gritty, raw and beautiful. The noir aspect and the way Mick finds himself in places that seem to fit his preferred time period were brilliantly executed and expertly woven into the fabric of vampire lore.
The 'rules' created by Mr. Munson for his type of vampire are familiar, but have just enough of a twist to make it a whole new world. When combined with the nostalgia and simplicity of the noir backdrop, the ride we're taken on reminds me of how I felt when I saw the last episode of "Mooonlight" I wanted more.
For someone like me, who doesn't usually gravitate to vampires in television, movies or books, I have been enjoyably surprised by both the TV show and this, the novel that inspired it. My hat's off to Mr. Munson for managing to describe the complex world Mick Angel lives in, while at the same time leaving no room for argument as to who it is telling the tale. And for never digressing into words or actions unfit for a hardened guy who's seen and done way too much...and kills to live.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and look forward to another foray into this darker, more 'absolute' Mick. Combining the elements was genius. The execution? Flawless.
Buy the book. Read it. Whether you liked the television show, like vampires, like noir or just happen to enjoy grassroots good storytelling, you won't be disappointed.
