Crooked Lines is an amazing story of two lives, each tangled in its own way, but overseen by God. The prose is beautiful and not preachy. It is so well written that you feel the emotions and experiences of the two main characters in two different countries with 2 different paths. As someone who has lived in both countries, I am impressed with how well the scenes are depicted. I loved reading this book.

Oh my goodness, where to start?
First of all, I thought this was a romance. It is SO not a romance, which actually helps me love it better, to be honest. It's more a journey with a couple of very lovable people throughout their lives.
I don't have much experience with the Catholic church, so perhaps what I loved best was taking the journey with Sagai through his faith, and all the experiences he has. I was angry for him, heartbroken for him, rejoiced with him, and in the end, just wanted the best for him. The culture that Michael's brought into the story through India was fascinating.
I often got frustrated with the other main character, Rebecca. But in retrospect, I think I got frustrated because her constant turning away from good decisions, and making bad ones, is really just a reflection of our own lives. Rebecca constantly wanting better, but not really choosing it, was a really interesting opposite to Sagai, who constantly chose better, but got worse.
I looked forward to sitting out on my porch swing and reading this book at night. I'm not Catholic, but I loved and appreciate the Christian elements and struggles in this story.
I'll be watching for more of Michael's work.
This book is an excellent read! It bridges two diverse cultures in a sensitive, thoughtful way. It shows how God's ways are His ways, no matter one's ethnicity.
I sympathize with Rebecca's guilt regarding her sister's death. I sympathize with Sagai and all of the unreasonable obstacles put in his path in trying to become a priest.
Once I had read the first few pages, I didn't want to set it down. Clearly, that wasn't possible, but with the parallel story lines, it was possible to take breaks without losing continuity.
Crooked Lines is a story that shows clearly how two people in different cultures react to adversity. Rebecca and Sagai both suffered severe setbacks in their lives. Their approaches reflected their different circumstances but both were molded by God and His place in their lives.
When I reached "The End," I was sad the story had concluded. More, please!
Heart-wrenching. Tear-jerking. And hauntingly beautiful, as two very distinct individuals' lives on two continents are presented, juxtaposed against opposing cultures, yet with a common thread. Holly Michael serves up two lives in Crooked Lines, one of American Rebecca, who lives a life of tragedy upon tragedy. When Rebecca's special needs little sister dies, her family turns dysfunctional and Rebecca seems to lose her way in life, choice upon choice. Holly also introduces us to Sagai Raj,who starts down the long journey to priesthood. The harder and more compassionate Sagai becomes, the more the church leaders seem determined to undermine his efforts and to blacklist him. Yet Sagai has been taught blind obedience to the church.
The real question comes in, can one please God, yet disobey the Church? Is the church the pure arm of God, or can some serve him in that possibly restrictive avenue, while others find God's Will in a path separate from the church, while still representing Christ's pure love? While God hates divorce, is there ever a time for it? The Church needs to be very careful to make the truth attractive, rather than a hindrance by making life all about laws that no one can keep on his own.
Father Michael is the ribbon that ties the two ends together. It is he who urges Sagai to join the priesthood and he comes to America and becomes a pen pal confidant to Rebecca. He is a constant in the midst of the storm of both protagonists' stormy lives.
Says Father Michael"Peace is not a place. It's in your heart. Peace is when you are living the life God intended you to live."
and...
"However life gets entangled, entwined, God straightens the lines because he loves us."
Due to subject matter, I would give this book a PG-13. But What an excellent story of real life, real dilemmas, and soul searching it is! Absolutely fabulous! Out to find the sequel!
I had bought this book before I also was gifted the book through bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.
Having lived in Bangladesh as a teenage, I can definitely say that Holly creates the smells, feeling, and sites of India. I recognized some of the Indian references she used, but would have appreciated a bit more translation. I had to just skip past some of the food or apparel she named in the Indian term. She skillfully brings you into that world. I appreciated the way Holly dealt with how a young girl can get drawn into an abusive marriage and why it is so difficult for them to leave. You are definitely drawn into the story and her characterizations are outstanding. However, I found myself wishing for a break in the intensity for both Characters. Editing for spelling and grammar could use some tweaking but over-all, well done.
